Say hello to Postais dos Namorados (Lovers’ Cards)! 👋
These cards are a product concept dating back to 2012 when I was in my first year of an MA in Communication Design. It was the project that ignited a great passion for colorful and cut paper, considering it one of the cornerstones of Hey Picotado! As this project holds significant meaning for me, I’ve decided to share it with you! 🤍
For those curious, a bit more context! Going back to 2012, the challenge was to create a product that reflected the concept of “Being Portuguese” to present in a pop-up shop. My starting point was the traditional Lenços dos Namorados (Lovers’ Handkerchiefs), characteristic of the Portuguese region of Minho. To connect everything to the field of my master’s degree, I chose to transpose the meticulous and detailed technique of embroidery from these typical handkerchiefs to cut paper. I analyzed the handkerchiefs in detail, dissecting each layer of information that a Lenço dos Namorados (Lovers’ Handkerchiefs) has (text, symbols, embroidered borders), and then I moved on to drawing! I drew and recreated these various layers of information, first by hand and then on the computer, to proceed to their cutting in colored cardstock. Through the intersection, variation, and overlay of these layers of paper, it was possible to create different and personalized cards. Additionally, during the pop-up shop, visitors had the opportunity to build their own “handkerchief,” choosing the message, respective symbols, and decoration, making their card unique to offer to their loved one. 🤍
